It would have been nice if the game allowed more direct interaction with other players, but. You can custom-create your own rule set for a game to play in various interesting conditions, or partake in the daily challenge, which has you competing with other players around the world to see how well you can do in the game with a specific set of rules applied to your attempt.

To the game's credit, it packs in a ton of options. And while, yes, the fun is in seeing how well you can manage on each attempt, it would have been nice if the game made each of these attempts potentially longer. What's more, if you have a good run and actually make it all the way through the spire, the game can be beaten in an hour or two. Sometimes, it feels like how well you do on a run is largely down to luck, and that's never a great feeling. On the other hand, it's frustrating that you don't have more control over the construction of your deck, and you can't plan very much for what's coming ahead. On the one hand, they ensure that every time you attempt to take on the spire will be unique, and you'll never know what to expect. The game's Roguelike elements here are both a blessing and a curse. Do you use the campfire as a rare opportunity to rest and heal up, or do you use it to fuel a forge to improve one of your cards? Do you choose a really good card that doesn't work all that well with what your deck does, or a less interesting card that is a better fit? Do you spend your money on the shopkeeper's cards, do you add a relic to your collection, or do you take the rare opportunity to delete crappy cards from your deck to make it more efficient? Plus, the actual mechanics behind the card battles themselves are really well-crafted and nicely balanced.Īlso, every choice you make in this game feels important. It is immensely satisfying to custom-tailor your deck to have just the right kind of synergy, or to get a killer new card that fits in perfectly with your deck, and the game does a good job of keeping you on your toes with enemies that test you in different ways.
